Shanti suffered from depression/anxiety over the years and also experienced loved ones affected with mental health disorders. So, because of Shanti’s extensive community work in the 2010 decade, she decided to establish her very own nonprofit.
In May 2016, Shanti partnered with celebrities, influencers, and entertainment industry colleagues to launch the mental health stigma movement #silencetheshame and jumpstarted the conversation about mental illness and suicide.
On May 5, 2017, she and a group of community volunteers promoted the inaugural National Silence the Shame Day as a global awareness initiative to peel back the layers of shame and stigma related to mental health. The campaign received over 90,000,000 impressions on social media, and was one of Atlanta’s top five trending hashtags.
The Silence the Shame movement continued to gain traction and as a result, The Hip-Hop Professional Foundation was born in August of 2017. In 2018, the organization changed the Hip-Hop Professional Foundation’s name to Silence the Shame, Inc. to maintain branding and engage the community/donors to support mental health and suicide prevention.
Silence the Shame's Mission is to empower and educate communities on mental health and wellness. Our Vision is a stigma-free, culturally competent world where mental wellness is universally embraced and prioritized.
